About the role

The Jade Documentation Team has a position available in Christchurch for a technical writer. This is an exciting role with the key purpose of writing and maintaining information about company products, using software tools and system components to produce items such as course material, user guides, online help information, online tutorials, installation guides, and reference documents presented in a variety of formats.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Communicating in plain English to develop new documents and maintain existing documents in print and web formats to support internal staff and application users, which can include user guides, help systems, online tutorials, reference documents, white papers, and installation guides
  • Assisting in the analysis, design, and documentation of the JADE technology itself as part of the product information team or the individual analysis, design, and documentation of end-user applications developed within Jade Software
  • Working on tasks of moderate scope and technical complexity
  • Managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Ability to write simple to complex code examples
  • Ability to communicate well with both technical and non-technical groups
  • Generating and releasing documents for product information libraries
  • Other tasks and responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.

Vital to this role are excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical information into concise, clear, and easy-to-understand language suitable for its intended audience. You will need outstanding organisational skills and the ability to use ISO processes to produce quality results within agreed produce quality results within agreed time frames.

You will work closely with our software developers, product managers, and testers to communicate the functionality of our software in the most complete, accurate, and elegant way possible using our Agile development process. You will therefore need to have an understanding of what the software does and how people use it. You will be a critical member of the team, able to bring fresh ideas into the ways we create documentation and course material.

About you

As the successful candidate you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification; for example, the Graduate Diploma of Information Design or the equivalent, a BA or BSc degree, or the equivalent practical experience in information or education design and development
  • Relevant experience; for example, technical writing of product information, and optionally curriculum development and online publishing
  • The ability to communicate in plain English to develop new documents and maintain existing documents
  • The ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • The ability to write simple to complex code examples, and to communicate well with both technical and non-technical groups
  • Focus and attention to detail
  • Experience with Word for Windows and a single-source authoring tool such as Flare
  • A knowledge of HTML, CSS, Word macros, and PDF creation, and an understanding of general programming concepts
  • Experience with conveying technical concepts to a wider, less-technical audience
  • Experience using ISO processes and a corporate style guide
  • Interviewing skills required to determine the answers to the "when, why, how, and then what?" questions.
