Kāhu Environmental needs a new Technical Communicator to help us on our mission. If making a real difference for the environment and future generations spins your wheels, we’d love to chat.

What we need

We’re in the business of providing effective and useful advice to our clients, and how we communicate that advice is absolutely critical. Our reputation hinges on the quality of work that goes out the door, so everything we write needs to have a consistent voice, be clear, and look fantastic. Our team of consultants know their subject matter inside out, but need someone to work alongside them to make sure they can communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. Ideally we want someone who can work about 24 hours per week, but we’re open to discuss what works best for you.

Who we're looking for

You’ll be a champion of plain language communication, someone who’s able to cut through the waffle and distil complex ideas into clear, meaningful reports. You’ll be a great writer and oral communicator, who is also able to coach our team to improve their own writing. Ideally you’ll have experience in creating engaging infographics and diagrams, and be a whiz with formatting and document design. You’ll be experienced in proof reading and be comfortable offering constructive feedback on others’ writing.

You’ll definitely need these core skills:

  • Excellent grasp of English, both written and oral
  • Word processing
  • Editing, design and lay-out of technical documentation
  • Creating document templates
  • Experience working with complex policy and scientific documents
  • Understand the importance of executive summaries, and be amazing at writing them
  • Ability to interpret, simplify and communicate technical information
  • Skilled in working collaboratively across projects and disciplines
  • Great time and project management
  • Methodical and logical.

Ideally, you’ll tick some of the following boxes as well:

  • Knowledge of planning, environmental and/or other science subjects
  • Knowledge of te reo, Mātauranga and Kaupapa Māori
  • Design and development of public engagement and communication documents
  • Web design and publication
  • Writing funding applications.

What’s it like to work for us?

We are a team of smart, fun people that take real pride in what we do. You’ll find we all have a passion for people and the environment, which really shows in how supportive and dedicated our team is to each other, and to being part of something positive. New clients come to us in a number of ways, but most of our work comes from existing relationships. Clients we’ve done great work for come back to us because they trust us, they like how we work and they relate to the values we have. This means that we do jobs we enjoy, for people that we like.

What do we do?

We’re a team of planners, ecologists, kaupapa taiao specialists and communicators. We work alongside councils, iwi, central government, NGOs and private clients. We work on a wide variety of cool stuff, such as freshwater management, iwi environmental plans, environmental improvement projects, plan changes, resource consents, writing evidence and attending hearings. Projects can last anywhere from an hour to a year.

Meet the team and check out some of our projects here https://www.kahuenvironmental.co.nz/.

Ideally you’ll be able to work in one of our offices, but if that’s not possible we’re happy to discuss the option of working from home with the right person.

What we offer
