The CTCT division (a joint venture between Trimble and Caterpillar) develops positioning, control, and automation products for earthmoving and paving machines in the construction and mining industries, using technologies such as GNSS, optical total stations, lasers and sonics. The products are used in a range of applications where the operator of the machine benefits from having accurate horizontal and vertical guidance. About the opportunity

You will work as a key member on project teams to design, create and maintain technical documentation and ensure that our products and product upgrades get to market on time. You will be instrumental in ensuring that end users have the information they need to interact with our products and get the most from them.

As one of our Technical Authors you can expect you will:

  • Contribute to efforts to make or buy a portal to store and maintain records, files of work, and revisions for end user documentation.
  • Be responsible for generation of technical documentation and user assistance in a variety of formats including: PDF, HTML, XML, and video.
  • Be responsible for generation of a variety of end user and engineering. documentation, from a variety of inputs, including: 2D prints, engineering drawings/schematics, hardware test reports, hardware and software specifications, installation guides, user manuals, digital user assistance and wizards, video instruction, schematics, troubleshooting guides.
  • Provide technical editing including review and proofing of content created by other team members.
  • Organise material and complete writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Analyse developments in specific field to determine need for revisions in previously published materials and development of new material.
  • Interview production and engineering personnel and read journals and other material to become familiar with product technologies and production methods.
  • Study drawings, specifications, mock-ups, and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail.
  • Work with UX designers to select and edit photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.

Skills and experience required

The successful applicant will have experience in technical communications/documentation, a knowledge of industry standard tools and practices, and a communication style suitable for digital/mobile platforms. This will include:

  • A proven track record in technical writing, editing and proof-reading skills.
  • Previous experience in technical communication and documentation of hardware and software.
  • Experience in documenting highly technical and complex products and systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Familiar with basic web design concepts, comfortable with basic HTML markup, able to edit and enter HTML code autonomously from developers.
  • Experience with version control software (Git) and version control best practices.
  • Experience with content management software (MadCap Flare, Author-it, or similar).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of subject matter experts, from developers and engineers to end users.

  • HTML/HTML5
  • Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Adobe Acrobat, SketchUp, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premier a plus
  • AutoCAD, ProE, & CREO a plus
