The media has had a field day with the last minute changes and passing of our shiny new Health and Safety at Work Act. Confusion reigns and hearsay rules because few of us can be bothered to read the new legislation. It’s boring, right?

Yet it affects us all – every single one of us who works, whether a ‘worker’ or an ‘officer’. And as technical writers, many of us will be involved with documenting health and safety policies and procedures. So it’s important to know the truth.

At the Christchurch branch meeting on 16 September, Louisa Eades will present an overview of the new health and safety legislation – so you don’t have to read it. She’ll cover the key changes and what they might mean to your organisation.

About the speaker

After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Studies, Louisa went into business and legal publishing, specialising in occupational health and safety, hazardous substances, and environmental management. Her job involved reading legislation, case law and codes of practice, and translating them into compliance information for managers. She worked for CCH in the UK for six years and Brookers (Thomson Reuters) in New Zealand for 11 years, before leaping into a more generalist technical writing role with Streamliners. She has a NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health and has written articles for New Zealand’s premier safety magazine – Safeguard. She finds the new Health and Safety at Work Act anything but boring!
