Working with our UK and Australian peers: update

We’ve established a core working group with members from TechCommNZ, ISTC and ASTC to get our shared journal project underway. In the meantime, we’re working on exchanging newsletter and Communicator content between organisations. Communicator articles will be available in the member area of our website soon!

It's Braille with a capital B

Do you work with Braille users or write about Braille? The Braille Authority of Aotearoa New Zealand (BAANZ) now recommends we always write Braille with a capital B, every time we use the word. Check out their announcement.

Who hasn’t been talking about ChatGPT lately?

Over the last couple of months especially, we’ve seen all kinds of newsfeeds blowing up about OpenAI's ChatGPT. What is it? How good is it, really? Is it going to take over our jobs? What does it mean for our industry?

The Plain Language Act 2022 takes effect in April 2023

Organisations who report to the Public Service Commission will be gearing up to make sure they’re meeting the requirements of the Act from April this year.

They'll need to be writing any new or updated public-facing documents in plain language. They'll also need to be teaching their staff about plain language and the Act, and handling any feedback about their plain language communications.

We hope this has created an opportunity for some of our members to be more formally recognised for their plain language skills. Have you been appointed as a plain language officer under the Act? We'd love to hear about it - please let us know!

Plain Language Act 2022 (New Zealand)

Did you know? Policymakers in the USA are now working on the Clear and Concise Content Act of 2022, which will expand on their Plain Language Writing Act of 2010. It has passed through the Senate, so there's a few more steps to go before it becomes law (like resolving any issues and going to the President for action).
