From the President

December 2023

Hello everyone, Headshot of Ryan Wilson, TechCommNZ President, smiling.

I am honoured to be your new President. Here is just a little bit about me.

In my day job, I work at the University of Otago, based in Christchurch. I am mainly user-facing in this role, and I have over ten years of experience in IT, from SharePoint and SCCM to procurement and everything in between. I also have a proven ability to manage complex IT projects and provide excellent customer service. I also think I’m great at communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

I am also passionate about making a difference in my community. I am a member of the Haeata Community Campus Board and NZSTA Canterbury Regional Executive Board. In the NZSTA position, we work with other school boards and principals to provide guidance and assistance. At Haeata, I chair the Finance, Audit, and Risk Committee, as well as various other activities around the school.

While I am new to the world of TechCommNZ, I am more familiar with the world of governance.

I think from a high-level entry point, we should focus on helping technical communicators in New Zealand grow their careers, promote the value of technical communication in organisations, and build a strong community.

Here are some of my high-level plans for TechCommNZ:

  • Create new training and development programs to help members level up their skills.
  • Raise the profile of TechCommNZ in the New Zealand tech community and make it a must-join organisation for technical communicators at all levels.
  • Build a stronger, more engaged TechCommNZ community where members can connect, learn, and grow.

While I'm getting up to speed on TechCommNZ policies and procedures, I enjoyed our November meeting, where I met the entire board. I look forward to getting to know everyone, learning about their priorities and goals, and exploring ways to collaborate to achieve our shared vision.

I am confident that we can achieve great things together. I look forward to working with all of you and hope to meet you over the coming year.

Ryan Wilson
