Auckland Branch Event: Pictures with Words

In this shared session Steve Moss and Grant Mackenzie will demonstrate the benefits of using video screencasts to deliver material that has traditionally been delivered in written form.

If you are currently writing online help or technical documentation - with an emphasis on the "written" aspect - come along to this session to find out more about why you should consider using video-based content.

Steve will start the session by talking about:

  • the advantages of video over written material
  • the stages in the process for developing a video screencast
  • guidelines for developing video-based material
  • combining the strengths of video-based material with written material (with examples)
  • developing scripts and creating voice-overs.

Grant will then go on to describe:

  • Moving Stills
  • Screen Capture
  • Viewer Capture
  • Making it Snappy
  • Cosmetic Surgery
  • Talk Talk
  • Sharing with Everyone

We will finish with a Q&A session

Steve has worked as a self-employed technical communicator since 1988 and since March 2015, he has been working as Education content creator for WorkflowMax, a Xero company. He has held several positions with TechCommNZ, starting with website administrator in the late 1990s, vice president from 2001–2011 and president from 2011–2014. He is a life member of TechCommNZ, a member of ISTC and a senior member of STC.

Grant is the lone technical communicator for a New Zealand software house and is the resident TechCommNZ video evangelist. Although not having completely abandoned the written word, he has been communicating with his audience mostly through videos since 2010. Grant’s presentations at the three most recent TechCommNZ conferences were opportunities for his fellow technical communicators to learn from Grant’s mistakes in creating his video library (250 videos and counting) and so not replicate them when creating their own splendid videos.
