Wellington Branch Event: The Tech Comm career ladder and you

View the video of this presentation on our YouTube channel.

This important event is being held in conjunction with our Christchurch branch

Are you preparing to take the first step up your chosen career ladder? Are you preparing to jump ladders? Are you getting back on the ladder after a break from it?

TechCommNZ and the Student Outreach Programme are coordinating this month's branch event to bring you tips and tricks for a successful start.

The evening will start with half an hour of networking and finger food, followed by four 15 minute presentations.

Eve Hoets will kick things off with tips for building a successful mindset and creating your own opportunities. She's an aspiring motivational speaker who has built her own opportunities from the tender age of 15. She's not so much climbing a career ladder as cutting out the steps on the way up – and you can too!

Then, Emma Harding and Rebecca Officer discuss how to make yourself look good in an interview. This might include things like your work experience, knowledge of certain tools, soft skills, or even personality traits. Emma is one of the biggest employers of technical writers in the country, and Rebecca was our 2016 Conference Speaker on building Agile, collaborative teams with DITA. They have sat in the interviewer's seat, and the interviewee's seat, and they're here to bring you the dos and don'ts. After all, having the skills doesn't mean much if you can't get them across in the interview!

Finally, Joan Nanartowicz will be talking about how to put together your portfolio... and more importantly how to use it. Your portfolio is both your point of difference and your best tool for backing up your skills.
