Christchurch Branch Event - Social media - meaningless frippery or serious business?

As a freelance writer and strategist, and someone who sneaks into TechCommNZ under 'related-fields', Louise Landess gets to dabble professionally in a variety of styles and media beyond technical writing, including social media.

Earlier this year she was fortunate to spend three and a half days on Vancouver Island at Canada's largest Social Media Camp surrounded by, learning from, and sharing ideas with social media specialists from throughout the country. Knowing that tech writers sometimes 'rise above' this genre and avoid it like the plague, she also knows that as well as being a lot of fun, social media is a serious business.

Louise is keen to share some of the tips, tricks, and information she picked up, and we would love you to join us for her informal presentation and discussion at this month's meeting. We can share experiences and ideas over nibbles and wine at what is in Canterbury at least, the start of the social season!

About the speaker

Louise Landess has been putting words into boxes for decades. Starting out her career in sales and distribution slinging a tape gun in an East End record warehouse, she went on to work in product management and marketing in the West End before moving to NZ in the early '90s.

Involved with publishing, marketing and distribution of computer games, music videos and albums for many high profile labels (including Palace Software, Virgin, A&M, Parlophone and Capitol Records) she found that this rock and roll experience counted for little when she arrived in rural Riwaka without a movie premiere or album launch in sight.

Her experience of working with programmers at Palace Software (in the days of Amstrad, Spectrum, and C64) was enough to help her open a door with a financial software publisher here in Christchurch where she ventured into training and documentation. Long story short, melding all her experiences together, 16 years ago she reinvented herself as a freelance writer, workshop facilitator, and strategist.

With a diverse client portfolio including local and central government organisations, tertiary institutions, large corporates, small businesses, and individuals in NZ, North America, UK, and South East Asia, Louise still loves the challenge of putting words in boxes across a range of platforms and media to make the message fit the space.
