Christchurch Branch Event: Password Tune-up for Ordinary Mortals

Until recently, Emma Harding rated her password hygiene at about 6 out of 10 – good in parts, like the curate’s egg, and therefore not really good at all.

Emma’s at the lower end of the geek scale – definitely in the Ordinary Mortal range rather than up the top where the MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) hang out. She needed a pragmatic approach to password security so that she could get on with the important things in life, like eating, drinking, and buying movie tickets online.

Now that she’s cleaned up her act, she’s ready to remind others why our personal password security is so important, and share her “ordinary mortal” experience of adopting better practice. She’s read some of the articles so you don’t need to, but she’s not a guru! So, while this presentation is geared towards ordinary mortals, MVPs are extremely welcome to come along and fill in the gaps.

Also, following on from the fascinating evening with CTCT’s Joan Nanartowicz and James McLaughlin, we are keen to continue our series of People Talking About Their Jobs. Everyone’s job is interesting. Please get in touch – christchurch@techcomm.nz – and let us know if you’re available to present any time in 2021.

About the speaker

Emma Harding is the Writing Systems and Standards Manager at Streamliners, and has been a technical communicator since 1989. She's astonished at how little has changed over the last 30 years, and recently observed that we still make up rubbishy passwords and think "it will be ok". (It won't.)

In her spare time, Emma likes to do all the things needed for a civilised life: eat, drink, read, play cards with friends, be surrounded by family, enjoy the astonishing beauty of nature, and watch Netflix.
