Christchurch Branch Event: Redesigning Staff Induction at Pegasus Health

As technical communicators, we’re very familiar with the notion of having to wear several hats during the course of a working week as we weave our magic. With our knowledge of writing, and also of user interfaces and user experience, we are the ultimate user advocate.

In this presentation Trevor Keohane and Eirlys Beverley-Stone from Pegasus Health will talk about an example of when their team had to wear these various hats, and how they helped one stakeholder understand what would be required for a successful re-launch of the staff onboarding (induction) solution.

Within the constraints of SharePoint they will show you how they “let the users do the testing”, had the expected result, and how a more considered and collaborative approach achieved a successful mark 2.

You’ll get to see a SharePoint solution (warts and all), and see the before and after to judge for yourselves.

About the presenters

Trevor Keohane

Trevor Keohane is the Intranet and Extranet Manager for Pegasus Health – a charitable company that supports 109 general practices within Christchurch and Canterbury, which provide care to over 365,000 enrolled patients. Trevor manages the SharePoint intranet for the 24-Hour Surgery and corporate offices, as well as a SharePoint extranet for the Pegasus community that includes 330 GPs, 355 practice nurses, and nearly 400 support staff.

Career hats to date include a good long stint as a tech writer for various software and hardware houses, a plain English writer for a graphic design consultancy, and an unexpected role as a usability analyst. Working on websites means he gets to wear all the usual tech comm hats, and a few new ones. Spare time is swallowed up with the family stuff, but distractions include craft beer, sailing, and some of the new events and venues that the new Christchurch has to offer, including PechaKucha and Free Theatre nights.

Eirlys Beverley-Stone

Eirlys joined Pegasus Health in 2014 with an information systems management background. Her first introduction to intranets was in 2002 when she designed an HTML-based site for a growing organisation that needed a document management system. This site grew to deliver news and updates to the wider organisation, and eventually migrated onto an early version of SharePoint. The various challenges involved in this work led Eirlys to explore the factors which make intranets successful for her Masters in Information Systems dissertation.

Eirlys has an interest in the wider digital workplace and the use of collaborative working spaces. In the last 18 months, she has focused on producing key organisational sites that use workflows to support and improve organisational work processes. In parallel, she has helped to increase the number of collaborative and team sites, by educating and training end users.

Outside Pegasus Health, Eirlys supports other businesses and organisations in the online space, and delivers business systems analysis with a focus on end-user analysis.

In her spare time, her key focus is her family and a menagerie (horses, dog, chickens). Eirlys occasionally finds herself lugging a 15 kg pack out tramping/camping, enjoying some of NZ’s great walks whilst supporting her Scouting family, and occasionally competing her horse in ridden showing and dressage.
